ABout the Dialogue
The International Dialogue on Population and Sustainable Development is an annual two-day conference taking place in Berlin. Since its inception in 2002, the ID has become an important forum to discuss strategies, opportunities and challenges of promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights as well as implications of population dynamics. The platform brings together stakeholders from government, international organisations and implementing agencies, civil society, youth networks, academia and the private sector to exchange expertise and vision on how to best ensure the realization of sexual and reproductive health and rights in line with Agenda 2030 and the ICPD Programme of Action.
16th International Dialogue (2018)
"I think it is quite unique that all of us from different sectors are discussing the same topic, so we are getting different perspectives and a better understanding of where we are all coming from."
Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye
Director of the Family Health Division of the Ghana Health Service16th International Dialogue (2018)
"What makes the International Dialogue so valuable is that it brings together and enables an exchange of ideas between such a mix of stakeholders: civil society representatives and activists but also academics and representatives from the UN and from countries that support SRHR."
Sietske Steneker
Director of the Brussels Office of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)
16th International Dialogue (2018)
"The Dialogue is a good listening post to find out where the trends are, what issues are coming up and see how we can collaborate with other countries. I feel that we really need to make the Cairo conference a part of what governments and countries are doing. The Dialogue is a way to understand where different countries are at, and it clarifies the next steps we have to take to move the agenda forward."
Dr. Juan Antonio Perez III
Executive Director of the Commission on Population and Development of the Philippines
16th International Dialogue (2018)
"I am impressed that the topics discussed at the Dialogue are keeping up with the times. Discussions here with participants have shown me that there is still hope for the ICPD agenda. It’s always a struggle but coming here revives that spirit and hope in you. It helps to know there are people who feel as strongly about the issues as you do."
Mangala Namasivayam
Programme Manager for the Asian Resource and Research Centre for Women based in Malaysia
15th International Dialogue (2017)
"This conference has been very enlightening. During the mechanisms session, I learnt about systems in place to enable policy at the local level, and heard ideas for addressing challenges. I now have a strong idea about how to work with local government to promote SRHR for young adolescents."
Halima Abba Zad Ali
Deutsche Stiftung Weltbevölkerung, Kenya
15th International Dialogue (2017)
"It’s been really helpful to hear about best practices, how people are trying to get around some of the societal stigma barriers. Often in the SRHR space, you’re speaking to the converted and the ideas aren’t fresh and new, but here it’s become obvious how much work there is left to do. Given the current political backlash (against human rights), we need to educate the health sectors about why we need to respect the rights of all people. It’s really exciting and I’ve learned a lot!"
Lewis Emmerton
Advocacy Coordinator at CHOICE for Youth and Sexuality, the Netherlands
